Before you buy a t-shirt quilt from Memory Stitch, you should know that they use prison labor to make their t-shirt quilts. I can't even believe I'm writing this, it's so upsetting. I purchased a t-shirt quilt from them, because their prices looked great. Turns out it was too good to be true. When I looked up their address for where to ship the shirts for my T-Shirt Quilt, it showed up as a correctional facility in Nebraska. I couldn't believe it. So I went to see with my own eyes. I packed up my shirts and tried to drop them off at their facility myself. Sure enough, I couldn't drop off the shirts because the t-shirt quilts are manufactured at a prison!
I've been wanting to make a t-shirt quilt for a long time. Memory Stitch showed up on a google search, and while they are a new company, they looked legitimate. My husband passed away last year, so these t-shirts are really important to me. I wanted to give our kids something they could remember their father by. A t-shirt quilt was the perfect way to memorialize his life - he had t-shirts from all of our travels and his bowling and softball teams.
But I can't imagine handing over his precious memories to someone in prison, making 50 cents an hour and who doesn't care at all about the integrity of his shirts or his memory. It's really upsetting to think about.
When I asked Memory Stitch about where their t-shirt quilts are made, they were very secretive and wouldn't give me any information besides "by professionals." I asked if I could drop the shirts off, and they told me that they don't accept drop offs at their facilities. Now I know why!
Prison labor is essentially slave labor. Workers make 50 cents an hour. I don't want to think about my t-shirts being handled by someone in that kind of situation. What happens if they mess something up, or lose one of my husband's shirts? Those workers will not care a bit. But it would be devastating to me and my family.
Since I've canceled my T-Shirt Quilt order with Memory Stitch, I have done a lot of research and found a lot of other great t-shirt quilt companies that are transparent about their workforce, like TooCoolTShirtQuilts.
You deserve to know who is making your t-shirt quilt. Memory Stitch is a terrible, deceitful company and should be avoided at all costs.
